Lip Fillers – What To Expect?

Everything you need to know about lip fillers.

It seems that there is a collective obsession with beautiful lips. It’s for good reason.

Science tells us that our lips are our most alluring facial feature. Full, symmetrical lips can make the face more youthful and attractive.

Now that we are permitted to remove our masks outdoors, there are more opportunities to show off our lips and put on lipstick. Expertly done lip fillers not only naturally enhance our lips but can also improve the application of makeup.

However, little is discussed openly or accurately about lip fillers. Social media is rife with images of sausage lips and botched lip jobs. There is also talk of lip fillers being lumpy and feeling unnatural.

Don’t let trends and misinformation hold you back from enhancing your lips. Because when done right, lip fillers can make your lips a thing of beauty.

Let’s demystify lip fillers. We start with the basics in this article.

What are lip fillers made of?

Lip fillers are made of hyaluronic acid which is a naturally-occurring substance in our bodies. It is often used in skincare products and aesthetic procedures because it can help skin retain moisture.

We use Restylane Kysse, a premium brand of fillers designed especially for the lips. It allows natural movement of lips and yields soft, kissable results.

Benefits of lip fillers

  • Natural-looking volume

Lip fillers when done right should naturally volumise your lips, without others realising that something has been done.

  • Correct asymmetry and even out lip shape

This is one of the most common reasons for getting lip fillers done. A touch of filler can improve visual harmony and improve symmetry. Injecting filler into the vermilion border of the lip can also create more definition to the margins of the lips, which will improve the application of lipstick.

  • Anti-aging

Lip fillers can restore volume lost in lips due to aging. When injected in the right places with the appropriate volume, it can smoothen the lips without necessarily making the lips appear fuller.

  • Hydration

Fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that has the ability to attract water. It will help your lips stay hydrated and firm. You can be less reliant on lip balms.

  • Effective treatment with visible, lasting results

Forget lip plumpers that don’t work, or work by irritating your lips. Lip fillers are safe and deliver visible results that last 6 to 9 months.

The Golden Ratio and your lips

The golden ratio, denoted by the Greek letter ϕ, is derived from a mathematical concept that the most aesthetically pleasing ratio found in nature and the human anatomy is 1:1.618.

According to the golden ratio, your lower lip should ideally be 1.618 times thicker than the upper lip. We follow the golden ratio as a general guide. An unnatural appearance can occur when we depart too far from the golden ratio.

Perfect lip shape

Lip fillers can do more than just volumising your lips. It is in fact an effective tool for perfecting your lip shape. The perfect lip shape has:

  • Pronounced Cupid’s bow and well-defined vermillion border
  • Volume in the lip body that tapers to the corners
  • Proportionate lower and upper lips guided by the golden ratio
  • Neutral or slightly turned up mouth corners
  • Symmetry

Lip filler is a procedure that requires technical skill as well as an artistic eye. Your injector needs to have a good grasp of the lip anatomy, be experienced, as well as listen keenly to you, in order to enhance your lips in a way that will suit your facial profile and personality.

At Skinscape, our experienced doctor will be able to create the perfect, natural-looking set of lips for you.

  • Less is more

Lip enhancement is a gradual process that is reviewed overtime. We always start with a conservative amount before building volume in subsequent appointments, if needed. As a gauge, our first-time patients usually use less than one syringe of filler in their first treatment.

  • Respect your natural lip anatomy

We will be honest about what can be achieved and explain the best approach for your unique set of lips. We will reality-check your lip goals when necessary, and won’t over-promise.

  • Premium lip filler

We use Restylane Kysse for lips, which is a quality, safe and effective brand of lip fillers.

  • Minimal downtime and pain

Expert injection techniques and the availability of local anaesthesia allow for a comfortable treatment and smooth recovery.

How long do lip fillers last?

As our lips are very mobile and lip fillers are made of finer particles, they tend to be absorbed into the body faster as compared to harder fillers used for other facial parts (such as nose and chin). First-time patients will typically find that lip fillers last about 6 months.

If you are looking to maintain your lips with fillers, you may be able to stretch your appointments more and more over time as there will be a build up of collagen in your lips with every treatment.

Should you want to remove the fillers for any reason, an injection of a compound called hyaluronidase will be able to dissolve the fillers and reverse the treatment. If you decide to discontinue lip fillers, your lips will retract back to its original shape as your body breaks down the filler.
